KLM, AlgaeLink to explore algae for jet fuel

Dutch companies AlgaeLink N.V. and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will cooperate on a pilot project to develop an alternative aviation fuel from algae. The announcement of the exclusive agreement was made at the Future Fuels Aviation Summit in London.

“Because of our expertise in optimizing algae growth in a photo-bioreactor (PBR) and the extraction of biomass and oil out of the PBR, they came to us,” said Hans Van de Ven, managing director of AlgaeLink.

Cruise companies have contacted AlgaeLink as well. “At this point in time we are negotiating with the world’s largest cruise liner to build an algae-growing-and-oil-extraction-system on a cruise ship,” Van de Ven said. “The emitted carbon dioxide will be intercepted and together with the biological waste of the ship will be used within the algae-to-oil-system. The oil will be extracted on board the ship and can be used, after refining, directly in the diesel engines.”

The Future Fuels Aviation Summit examined new developments concerning the consumption of fuel in the future. A road map for the next 5 to 15 years has been created as a guideline for the aviation fuel sector. Experts gave lectures on fuel efficiency techniques which can be implemented today and new possibilities for use of alternative fuels by the aviation industry. AlgaeLink presented several new technologies which proved it is feasible to produce alternative aviation fuel for the industry.

Besides teaching and higher education management, his scientific research interests involved studies related to: Ecology, Plant physio-Pathology, Environmental Protection, Physiology, Development of Modern Agricultural Production Systems. Also, biofuel’s production from energy plants, including machinery for biodiesel, and Biofuels production from algae using modern photo-bioreactors.

During his stay in Brussels, representing Greece for Research and Technology, he acquired experience in R&T, planning and management, acting as counselor to the Greek Ambassador, at the COREPER level, and to the respective Minister. Through his participation to ELOT technical committees ELOT/TE 86 and ISO/TC126, he has acquired experience in product’s certification.

Most of the Research Grants he has taken, required the participation of at least one industrial partner. More specifically, he has cooperated with BIORYL S.A., a chemical Co., SEKAP S.A. , SEKE, Partner of Philip Morris, since 2006 head of marine biology department of  ALGAELINK.

His scientific research work, comprising over 70 prototype papers published in international journals and proceedings of international Gongresses, attracted international recognition, expressed by serious economic funding from organizations like: International Atomic Energy Agency, NATO, FAO, European Union, Ministry of Research and Technology. He has served as global coordinator of FAO International Organization for Biological Control, selected by the International Organization of Biological Control.He has served as referee in international and European projects (Commission/DGVI).
